Black heritage takes center stage at the African American Cultural Center of Long Beach (AACCLB). A vital institution dedicated to preserving, honoring, and advancing the rich legacy of the Black/African American community in Long Beach. Moreover, this cultural hub offers a unique opportunity to explore and celebrate the history, struggles, and triumphs that have shaped the Black experience.
Journey of the AACCLB
The AACCLB’s journey started on February 20, 2018, when Councilman Austin introduced a proposal to the City Council. This proposal led to the identification of potential City-owned sites for the cultural center. By September 2018, the City Council allocated crucial funds to support planning and outreach efforts. These funds were essential to bringing this vision to life.
From February to May, the community actively shaped the center’s future through roundtable meetings, focus groups, and an internet survey. Tasha W. Hunter of Wiggins Hunter Consulting, along with Alan Burks of Environ Architecture, Inc., led this engagement. They partnered with Lord Cultural Resources, a national leader in creating cultural centers and museums, to ensure the best practices were followed.
The AACCLB’s Incorporation
The AACCLB became a 501(c)3 nonprofit agency in July 2020. In 2023, the AACCLB’s commitment to excellence earned it the title of California Nonprofit of the Year. This recognition highlights the center’s significant impact in promoting Black heritage and culture.
