Black political empowerment is crucial to the advancement of the Long Beach community and beyond. Even with the monumental achievements of Long Beach Black politicians such as Mayor Rex Richardson, former councilman Dee Andrews, councilman Al Austin II, councilwoman Dr. Joni Ricks-Oddie, 2026 CA Candidate for Governor Sharifah Hardie and others, more Black people are needed in politics.
Although the Fifteenth Amendment granted Black people the right to vote in 1870, the Black community continues to face significant systemic challenges. These challenges create disparities in key areas like home ownership, business ownership, generational wealth, education, and family structures. Addressing these issues requires not only a collective effort, but simultaneously requires a robust presence in the political arena.
Black Political Empowerment Necessary in 2024
Furthermore, as we move through 2024, Black individuals remain underrepresented in elected positions. This lack of representation hampers our ability to address issues that disproportionately affect the Black community. To change this narrative, it is essential for Black people to actively engage in the political process—not just as voters, but as candidates, advocates, and leaders. Again, increasing Black political representation will help influence decisions that affect our daily lives. It will also contribute to a more equitable society.
However, choosing qualified candidates over voting based solely on skin color ensures candidates prioritize the needs of the Black community. While many support Vice President Kamala Harris for instance and are proud of her potential to be the first Black female President, concerns about her past as a prosecutor and attorney general remain for some. Having a voice in politics holds leaders accountable and prioritizes community issues. All candidates must be properly vetted and their policies defined.
Empowering the Long Beach Black Community Through Politics
Active political participation empowers us to shape policies that directly impact the Black community. By voting, running for office, or supporting candidates who understand our struggles and aspirations, we ensure that we effectively represent our interests. Otherwise things remain the same. This engagement not only helps to address systemic inequalities but also fosters a more inclusive decision-making process.
We encourage everyone to learn about political candidates and their platforms. Take the time to visit their websites and understand their policies. Your involvement—whether through voting, advocacy, or direct participation in politics—drives meaningful change.
Building a Stronger Future Requires Black Political Empowerment
Black votes matter more than just participation; they represent our political power and shape the future of Long Beach’s Black community. In addition, by increasing our political engagement, we can move from the margins to the center of decision-making processes, while simultaneously ensuring that we hear and address our community’s needs and voices.
In conclusion, Black political empowerment is not just a right; it is a responsibility. After all, we must rise above historical disparities. Active participation in politics will help secure a brighter future for our community.
